Virginia Tech Wrestling announced Tuesday that they will hold the first ever wrestling match on English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park. The event will take place on Sunday, November 10 against Northwestern, and it is being called the Mat on the Mound.
Virginia Tech’s wrestling program has become known for their unique ideas on ways to create more interest in the sport. The Hokies have hosted a wrestling match inside the Moss Arts Center once a year since 2015, and they are hoping that this new venue can provide similar new intrigue.
"As a program we are always looking for new ways to improve the experience for both our student-athletes and our fans," Virginia Tech wrestling coach Tony Robie said. "Much like wrestling at the Moss Arts Center, I think that English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park offers a very unique opportunity for us to do something different and continue to be creative in how to showcase wrestling at Virginia Tech.”
According to the University, the wrestling mat will be placed on the infield in front of the pitching mound. As with all wrestling matches, fans will be able to attend for no cost.
Between the exciting new venue and the national praise Virginia Tech’s wrestling team has received leading up to the season, the Hokies are hoping for a good crowd at the event.
“I think that Atlantic Union Bank Park is the ideal outdoor venue for this type of event,” Robie said. “We need the Hokie Nation to come out and pack the park on Nov. 10."
