Three-star DT Gary Smith has had his fair share of high caliber schools pursuing him, but is approaching a decision with two schools emerging as finalists for him.
Smith told us that Virginia Tech and Duke are the finalists in his recruitment. The three-star Tennessee recruit visited Duke earlier this month and is taking his official visit to Virginia Tech this weekend.
Once Smith takes his official to Virginia Tech, it seems that a decision may happen shortly after. As Smith told us, he is currently planning on making his decision "pretty soon" with the Hokies appearing to get the last visit pre-commitment.
The Hokies are currently pursuing Smith as a defensive tackle as Virginia Tech continues to try to reload a defensive tackle position that has played a pair of true freshman significantly this year in Mario Kendricks and Norell Pollard. However, that came after both players have appeared to pass guys like JUCO transfer Jaden Cunningham and redshirt sophomore Robert Porcher IV, showing how the Hokies aren't afraid to give true freshman early playing time as VT did in the past with Ricky Walker.
That will likely be part of what is brought up when Smith travels to Blacksburg. However, Smith is also looking forward to seeing the "campus as a whole" as he hasn't spent too much time outside of the Hokies' athletic facilities during his previous visits.
Going into this official visit with a decision likely coming soon after, Smith has a good idea on what the key factors will be in making his decision.
"I’m looking for a family feel, almost looking for a home away from home, and somewhere I feel like I can get a college education and contribute to whatever team I decide to go to," Smith said.
Unsurprisingly, the focus of his official visit will likely be around showing Smith that Virginia Tech can provide him that "home away from home" and "family feel" that he's looking for in is college of choice.
Gary Smith is down to Virginia Tech and Duke with the Hokies currently having the last scheduled visit before he makes his decision in the near future.
