Virginia Tech's first big recruiting weekend of the summer included several talented 2020 and 2021 recruits visiting like 2021 four-star WR Jayden Thomas, who's visit went quite well. https://twitter.com/jgpt333/status/1137525430041350144 Thomas told us that he had a "great" visit to Virginia Tech and that he "really enjoyed it." So what did Thomas do while on his visit to Virginia Tech? "I got to see the weight room, talk with Coach Fuente in his office with my family, got a tour of the campus, and put on the uniform," Thomas said. The thing that likely stands out the most from that list is the conversation Thomas had with Justin Fuente which went quite well according to the four-star WR. "It was good. We got to talk about a lot of stuff like fishing and his personal background," Thomas said. The strong impression left by Justin Fuente went beyond the personal time that Thomas spent with him and was part of what stood out to him about his visit. "How much everyone made me feel welcome especially Coach Fuente with our conversations in his office then on the field while throwing the football around," Thomas said about what stood out. So how did this visit impact his recruitment? "VT has always been special to me but this trip was good because I got to know the coaches better and learn their vision of the program," Thomas said. While this visit grew Thomas' interest in Virginia Tech, the Hokies have always "been special" for Thomas as he mentioned largely due to his deep family connections to the Hokies. "My mom was born and raised in Blacksburg, my grandfather Phillip Rogers is in the VT Hall of Fame, and my grandmother just retired from VT after 45 years, so I was obviously raised a Hokie," Thomas said. For those who don't know, Phillip Rogers started his career at RB before moving to QB and becoming the first African-American quarterback in Virginia Tech football history during the 1975 season. This came after he was the first Hokie to run for 1,000 yards during the 1973 season. Thomas told us that it will "be a factor" when he does make his collegiate decision, but that it definitely won't be the only factor in his recruitment and eventual decision-making process. Looking ahead, Thomas told us that he has plans to visit Alabama and Virginia in the coming weeks while Thomas is also receiving lots of interest from in-state Georgia and Ohio State. What's clear is that Thomas is seen as one of the best wide receivers in the 2021 class regardless of region with a dream list of schools east of the Mississippi. Virginia Tech made a strong impression on Jayden Thomas as the Hokies hope Thomas will follow his grandfather's legacy at Virginia Tech.
