Virginia Tech made a splash via the transfer portal as the Hokies landed a commitment from Kansas grad transfer Evan Fairs.

Fairs is the latest transfer to choose the Hokies joining fellow Kansas grad transfer and RB Khalil Herbert, Youngstown State grad transfer DE Justus Reed, and Rutgers transfer RB Raheem Blackshear among others.

Fairs' best season was in 2017 as he had 24 receptions for 335 yards and a touchdown in 9 games. He has one year of eligibility after redshirting this past season though he could potentially apply for more eligibility due to past injuries.

After seeing Damon Hazelton transfer to Missouri, Jacoby Pinckney to Appalachian State, and Hezekiah Grimsley & Phil Patterson also enter the transfer portal, Fairs gives the Hokies a much-needed addition to the depth at wide receiver.

Additionally, Fairs brings a bigger target to the outside at 6'3'' that fits well with what Tech has with Tre Turner and Tayvion Robinson leading the receiver corps. While Fairs will definitely have to compete for the open starting receiver job, his size and solid 2017 season where he showed lots of promise prior to injuries slowing him down gives Tech fans plenty of reason to be intrigued.

The most important thing though may be the leadership and veteran presence he adds to a young WR room that, before Fairs, only had 2 juniors or seniors: Tre Turner and walk-on Keondre Banks.

We will have more as this story develops.
