Three-Star TE Fernando Garza Receives a Virginia Tech Offer

Three-star TE Fernando Garza is one of the fastest-rising recruits in the country at his position having received several offers this month. That offer surge has included a trio of Power 5 schools in Iowa State, Kansas, and Virginia Tech.

Garza had this to say about his initial reaction to receiving a Virginia Tech offer.

"I was honored because I feel it's a privilege when any college shows interest in me especially enough interest to offer me," Garza said.

Assistant Beau Davidson was the one leading the charge with Garza leading up to this offer and staying in contact with him. Garza and Davidson also have a unique connection not only because Garza is from the same high school in Houston that Davidson played at (Katy HS), but Davidson also played tight end for Katy HS just like Garza.

"Our relationship is good considering he played tight end at Katy also and overall, he just seems like a cool guy to be around," Garza said.

Garza's Houston roots means that he is at the center of Virginia Tech's #TX2VT movement. While the Hokies have offered recruits outside of the Houston area in Texas, that area has been where the Hokies have had the most success with talented DEs Alec Bryant and Robert Wooten signing as part of the 2020 class along with four-star QB Dematrius Davis being the headline commit for Tech's 2021 class to date.

Unsurprisingly, Garza has taken notice of the #TX2VT movement but that isn't the only appealing thing that the Hokies have to offer him that is impacting his recruitment.

"It has a good amount of impact with all the recruiting coming from Texas, but another big impact would be all the new facilities being built," Garza said.

Looking ahead, Garza told us that he is hoping to visit all of the schools that have offered him. Given the distance, it seems like Virginia Tech's Spring Game on April 18th could be a targeted date for a visit given how the aforementioned Dematrius Davis is already making the trip from Houston to Blacksburg. Additionally, it's safe to guess that the Hokies' coaching staff likely will make a stop at Katy HS later this spring to try to set up a visit with Garza.

For now, Fernando Garza is excited to have an offer from Virginia Tech, but is still keeping things wide open.

"With it being a big D1 school, it does impact my recruitment but as of right now, I am open to all schools."
