Three-star Fort Worth, TX WR Da'Wain Lofton has been one of Virginia Tech's top wide receiver targets for months now with the Hokies being a top contender for him. That remains the case ahead of him making a "big announcement" at 3pm Eastern as he tweeted out yesterday evening.

Lofton told us that the Hokies are among five schools currently standing out in his recruitment along with Mississippi State, Indiana, Vanderbilt, and Washington State. Lofton told us that those 5 schools are currently standing out for him because he has a "good relationship with all of those schools."

Additionally, Lofton told us that the Hokies are in contact with him "at least a few times a week" while Mississippi State also is among those making the biggest push for him.

It should come as no surprise then that WRs coach Jafar Williams is leading the charge in his recruitment with RBs coach Adam Lechtenberg also having plenty of involvement in it. However, as Tech has upped their pursuit, so has Williams taken on a greater role in leading charge for the talented Texan wide receiver.

It's unclear at this point what his big announcement will be at 3pm today. It is possible that Lofton could be making a commitment today as he previously told us that he was looking at making a decision prior to the upcoming fall season though he also told us that the current dead period has made him reconsider.

If it is a commitment, Mississippi State and Virginia Tech would be the two most likely destinations with the Bulldogs having a slight edge on paper and in the 247 Sports' Crystal Ball at the moment, but Tech being a strong contender as well.

Lofton is definitely a versatile receiver who would fit well in the slot as someone who could be used not only in the receiving game, but also on jet sweeps and as a return man for VT. The numbers back that up as he previously told us that he had 2,200 all-purpose yards last season including 1,200 receiving yards.

Finding a slot receiver likely is a high priority for the Hokies with a pair of primarily outside receivers already committed in star Richmond WR Jaylen Jones and talented Tennessee WR Tray Curry.

The Hokies remain in the hunt for Lofton as they look to beat out Mississippi State and others for the talented Texan receiver.

2:20pm Update

What we're hearing is pointing towards Virginia Tech as the likely destination for Da'Wain Lofton instead of Mississippi State, who was considered the favorite for Lofton as early as this morning, if this is a commitment, which is what we are now expecting it to be.
