Malachi Thomas has emerged as one of Virginia Tech's top running back targets with the Hokies gaining significant traction in his recruitment.

Thomas told us that the Hokies are among six schools standing out in his recruitment along with Kansas State, UCF, Appalachian State, Western Kentucky, and Georgia Southern.

Thomas had this to say about why the Hokies are standing out in his recruitment.

"It's just an amazing program and I love the coaches and the players," Thomas said.

The Hokies are also among three schools recruiting Thomas the hardest along with UCF and Western Kentucky as VT is in contact with him "everyday." RBs coach Adam Lechtenberg has been leading the charge with Thomas telling us that they have built a "good" relationship.

It shouldn't be surprising that the Hokies are in as heavy pursuit of Thomas as they as Thomas is a proven productive running back out of a state that Tech recruits heavily, Georgia. Additionally, the Hokies like to have plenty of versatile players in their offense and Thomas does that in mulitple ways as his stats back up.

During his 2019 season, Thomas had 1,942 rushing yards, 638 receiving yards, 282 return yards, and 36 touchdowns as he projects as a three-down back. His return abilities make him a top candidate to return kickoffs should he choose the Hokies given how special teams coordinator James Shibest has stated a preference for running backs returning kicks in the past.

That talent has continued to draw the attention of more schools with Thomas telling us that he feels Florida State could be the closest to offering him next. Given his tape and production, it wouldn't be surprising to see Thomas' offer list add more Power 5 schools in the near future.

Looking ahead, Thomas told us that he is "going to start narrowing my teams down next week." When he does, it seems like a very safe bet to expect Virginia Tech to be at the forefront of that group.

Virginia Tech is in great position for Malachi Thomas, but still have to work do as they try to land one of their top running back targets.
