Recently, Virginia Tech announced several future non-conference matchups including ones against Alabama and Ole Miss in the 2030s, and an unnamed SEC opponent in the 2020s.

Today, Virginia Tech revealed that previously unnamed SEC opponent.

The Hokies will face Vanderbilt in 2024 and 2025 as their season openers for each of those respective teams. Virginia Tech will travel to Nashville in 2024 with the game being hosted at Nissan Stadium, home of the Tennessee Titans. The 2025 game will be contested at Lane Stadium with a previously scheduled trip to Penn State immediately following.

Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock had this to say about the addition of Vanderbilt to the schedule (per VT press release).

“Playing Vanderbilt in Nashville, in the relative near term, provides a drivable destination for our fans in a major market with a strong Tech alumni base,” Babcock said. “Vanderbilt should also be a nice draw and addition to our ticket packages in Blacksburg.”

Adding Vanderbilt makes a lot of sense as a quality addition to the non-conference schedule. Nashville is also an appealing travel destination for Hokie fans and with the 2024 game (as well as the 2025 one) coming on Labor Day weekend, don't be surprised to see lots of Hokie fans make Nissan Stadium feel a lot more like a neutral site or even a home game instead of a road game.
