It wasn't long ago that Dequan Watts as an under-the-radar athlete in Atlanta who only held 2 offers, neither of which were from FBS programs. Over the first 16 days of May, Watts has seen his recruitment take off with several power 5 schools offering him including Virginia Tech.
Watts said that while he was a little surprised by the offer, he also knew that an offer was coming soon from the Hokies. Watts also said that the Hokies had been showing interest in him for the past week or so, a sign to him that VT was close to extending an offer.
With his recent offer explosion, Watts told us that his current top 6 includes Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, Boston College, and Virginia. Watts told us that the Hokies have been a "favorite school" of his in the past, and that he's been "trying to get to Virginia Tech for the longest time."
The Hokies aren't the only school Watts is hoping to visit as he is also looking to visit the other schools in his current top 6. While Watts is considered an athlete by the recruiting services, Virginia Tech is recruiting him as a cornerback.
There are two factors that are important for Dequan Watts in his recruitment; the ability to play early and the opportunity to study sports medicine. With Adonis Alexander set to graduate, the Hokies definitely will have some opportunity for guys like Watts to come in and push for early playing time. In addition, the Hokies haven't been afraid to play freshmen on special teams even if they aren't playing significant downs on offense or defense.
Watts' recruitment has taken off in the past few weeks, but more offers could be coming for him. Watts told us that Clemson, Florida, Tennessee, and Wisconsin are among the schools showing the most interest in him that haven't offered yet.
Dequan Watts has seen his recruitment explode in May with Virginia Tech hopping in recently and becoming a factor for the previously under-the-radar cornerback.
