Virginia Tech men's basketball has been making lots of noise recently adding a pair of 2019 recruits in three-star big man John Ojiako and three-star SG Nahiem Alleyne. However, that isn't the only news of note with the Hokies' men's program making lots of noise on the recruiting trail and the women's program making a major scheduling announcement.
With that said, here's the latest news and notes on Virginia Tech men's and women's basketball.
Virginia Tech Makes the Top 5 for SF/PF Lok Wur
After gaining a commitment from three-star big man John Ojiako, Virginia Tech made the top 5 for fast-rising SF/PF Lok Wur hours later.
Wur played his high school basketball in Nebraska so Creighton may have some advantages while Texas A&M and Oregon have holes to fill and Hawaii is the ultimate wild card. Virginia Tech's inclusion is an encouraging sign as VT continues to look to add size with Wur, at 6'9'', profiling as a 4 most likely with the potential to play the 3 as well or slide to the 5 when VT wants to go small, a statement that would have unimaginable to say with a 6'9'' player under Buzz Williams.
The Hokies will have some challenges though as it does not appear that Wur has visited VT yet. With the Hokies lacking official visits now, Virginia Tech may need to get creative with how they pursue Wur and hope that he will be willing to take only an unofficial visit.
While most may be excited about the potential for a Mike Young-Buzz Williams recruiting battle, both schools could have issues with a Creighton program that has local connections and an Oregon program that has had tons of recruiting success under Dana Altman.
Virginia Tech Women's Basketball to Face Purdue
The major news isn't limited to the men's program as the Virginia Tech women's basketball had some major scheduling news earlier this week.
The Hokies will host Purdue on December 5th in the upcoming season's ACC-Big 10 Challenge. This will be the second-straight year that the Hokies have received a home game after beating Rutgers last season. While is it unusual to have back-to-back home games, it is likely due in part due to Purdue's men's team hosting their ACC-Big 10 game along with a possible consolation for VT sitting out the men's side of the non-conference event.
This matchup against Purdue will be a great, early barometer to see how this Virginia Tech team looks with a pair of major grad transfers to pair with Dara Mabrey, Trinity Baptiste, and the Hokies' other returners in addition to their likely appearance in an early season tournament against quality, major conference competition.
Virginia Tech Offers 2021 SG Bryce McGowens
While on his visit to Blacksburg, 2021 shooting guard Bryce McGowens received an offer from Virginia Tech.
The Hokies are among several power conference programs to have offered McGowens along with ACC rivals Clemson and Pittsburgh, and more. While the Tigers could benefit from the in-state connection, Pittsburgh has a potential major advantage given the fact that his brother is Trey McGowens who has a prominent role in the Panthers' backcourt.
His visit appeared to have gone quite well beyond just receiving an offer according to HoopSeen's Justin Byerly.
As we've seen with the traction the Hokies have gotten with 2020 South Carolina recruits like Myles Tate and PJ Hall, this is where Mike Young's deep connections to basketball in the Palmetto State could prove very beneficial for the Hokies.
What's most clear is that Bryce McGowens will be a name to watch for the Hokies in the 2021 class.
2021 SF Daniel Nixon Will Visit Virginia Tech Soon
Bryce McGowens isn't the only 2021 recruit visiting Blacksburg as small forward Daniel Nixon confirmed to us that he plans to visit Virginia Tech just under two weeks from now.
Nixon, a New York native, currently holds 4 mid-major offers including ones from Old Dominion and Stony Brook. However, as noted above, the Hokies are among multiple larger programs showing interest in Nixon along with Maryland, Clemson, Providence, Butler, Pittsburgh, and more.
With Nixon set to visit Virginia Tech, you have to wonder if VT may end up offering him while on campus similar to what they did with McGowens. Obviously, that's speculation at this point but given the Hokies' substantial interest, it can't be ruled out as a realistic possibility.
