Check out the latest Virginia Tech football recruiting notes headlined by a top VT target setting his decision date.

3* DB Donovan McMillon

Priority target Donovan McMillon is ready to make a commitment as he set his decision date last night for this upcoming Saturday.

McMillon previously released a top 5 that included Virginia Tech, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Oregon. Since then, the Hokies and Gators have emerged as the frontrunners with McMillon visiting both schools during the dead period along with a trip to Texas A&M.

Justin Fuente and Justin Hamilton have taken the lead in the pursuit of McMillon, another sign of how much of a priority that McMillon is for the Hokies overall in the 2021 class. Additionally, recruiting assistant Lino Lupinetti deserves a lot of credit for the Hokies' strong chances with the relationship he's built with McMillon being a main reason why the Hokies are major contenders.

Landing McMillon would just about fill out Tech's 2021 defensive back class with four-star CB Markevious Brown likely being a take regardless for the Hokies, but likely few other DBs being takes still should they land McMillon.

3* ATH Christian Charles

Three-star athlete Christian Charles is down to 5 with Virginia Tech being among those to make the cut for him.

The Hokies were joined by Oklahoma, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Arkansas State in the top 5 for Charles.

Charles is an intriguing athlete prospect with some schools pursuing him as a quarterback and others primarily pursuing him as an athlete/WR. Tech intially offered him as a QB, but landing Tahj Bullock likely means that the Hokies are pursuing him more as an athlete while Oklahoma and Tennessee are also likely pursuing him as an athlete given that they have QB commits on board already.

It's unclear how heavily the Hokies are pursuing Charles though he is considered an underrated athlete who could have taken off more this recruiting cycle if camps weren't wiped out this spring and early summer.

Keep an eye on Charles as the Hokies are right in the hunt for the talented athlete from Gainesville, Georgia.

JUCO OL Ben Martinez

Glendale College offensive lineman Ben Martinez has emerged as a JUCO target to keep an eye on with offensive line coach Vance Vice recently reaching out to show some preliminary interest in him.

Martinez has received some FCS offers while also receiving interest from Texas Tech and California in addition to the Hokies. This comes after Martinez was an every down player at his JUCO program last season while bringing good size on the interior at 6'4'' and 300 pounds per his Hudl. He has three years of eligiblity remaining currently.

One of the interesting things about Martinez is that he is eligible to enroll at a major collegiate program as soon as this fall with FCS programs trying to push to get him now. Meanwhile, California is undecided while Texas Tech was hoping to see him play this fall prior to the NJCAA announcing the postponement of JUCO football to the spring. Tech has not made it clear yet whether they are looking at even potentially trying to add him to their roster prior to this season or whether they may wait till January.

Keep an eye on Ben Martinez as the Hokies once again look at trying to add some JUCO talent this cycle.
