Check out the latest Virginia Tech football recruiting notes as the Hokies make the top 5 for a top cornerback from Florida plus remain in pursuit of a Texas offensive lineman and evaluate a pair of WRs.

4* CB Markevious Brown

Four-star CB Markevious Brown recently released his top 5 with Virginia Tech making the cut for the talented IMG Academy cornerback along with Miami, Auburn, Ole Miss, and Arkansas.

Brown has been relatively quiet about his recruitment to date though it's hard to imagine Miami not being the frontrunner at this point. However, the Hokies do have a connection to Brown as one of his coaches is former Hokie Antonio Banks, which could prove valuable.

Tech already has multiple cornerbacks on board with D.J. Harvey joining Nykelius Johnson and Shawn Asbury II on the Fourth of July, but Brown is the type of talent that Tech would likely happily take. Additionally, taking four cornerbacks may not be the worst team especially given how one, in Asbury, has some versatility to play safety and given the fact that Tech has taken more safeties than CBs in recent years including no cornerbacks in their 2020 class.

Keep an eye on Brown as Tech looks to add a couple more pieces to their talented 2021 defensive back class.

3* OL Canon Boone

Canon Boone continues to be one of Virginia Tech's focal offensive line targets with the Hokies putting themselves in a solid position at this point.

Boone told us that the Hokies are standing "pretty high" in his recruitment while Mississippi State, Arizona, Colorado, and Navy are among those standing out for Boone. Additionally, the Hokies and Mississippi State are the two schools recruiting him the hardest with Boone hearing from the Hokies at least weekly.

One thing that doesn't come as a surprise is the fact that offensive line coach Vance Vice and recruiting assistant Beau Davidson; who has well-known Texas roots, are primarily in contact with him from VT.

Tech is definitely in contention for Boone, but Mississippi State, Arizona, Colorado, and Navy are all serious challengers. Tech and Colorado have the advantage of having offered Boone well before the other top contenders though Mississippi State has quickly made themselves a serious contender in his recruitment.

3* WRs Max Patterson & Clay Petry

While Virginia Tech still has multiple wide receiver targets that they are in the hunt for including Jayden Thomas, Skyler Bell, Kylen Austin, T.J. Huggins, and Da'Wain Lofton; Tech is also continuing to evaluate wide receiver with two names appearing to be wideouts that the Hokies are monitoring.

In-state Rutgers commit Max Patterson and 3* California WR Clay Petry are both players Tech appears to be monitoring with WRs coach Jafar Williams recently following Petry on Twitter and Tech's top 2 recruiting staffers, Mark Diethorn and John Iezzi, recently following Patterson.

Tech currently has one receiver commit in Richmond star Jaylen Jones and while they stand in good shape for multiple of their other targets, the Hokies are smartly continuing to evaluate their options given how much recruiting can change.

If Tech extends a new 2021 wide receiver offer soon, Patterson and Petry are two top candidates to land an offer.
