Three-Star DT, Virginia Tech Target Gary Smith Sets Commitment Date

Gary Smith 1 Jan 2019 190830 051148

After taking an official visit to Virginia Tech just over a week ago, three-star DT Gary Smith has set his commitment date.

Smith will commit this upcoming Sunday and choose between Virginia Tech and Duke, his 2 finalists as he told us before his VT official. The Hokies received Smith's final official after he took his official to Duke just a couple weeks earlier.

As he previously told us, Smith knows what will be the key factors in his upcoming decision.

"I’m looking for a family feel, almost looking for a home from home, and somewhere I feel like I can get a college education and contribute to whatever team I decide to go to," Smith said.

Smith has emerged as a priority for Virginia Tech with the Hokies currently lacking a defensive tackle in their 2020 recruiting class. Smith and the Hokies also have built up plenty of familiarity with the Tennessee recruit having visited Blacksburg multiple times this year.

Should he choose Virginia Tech, Smith would be the second defensive lineman from Tennessee to choose the Hokies joining three-star DE Derrell Bailey Jr.

After his official visit, Smith told us that he had a "good time" and that he was most impressed with "how involved" Hokie fans were from "start to finish" of Virginia Tech's victory over North Carolina.

Whichever team Smith chooses will be landing a talented recruit who has landed Power 5 offers from Florida State, Kentucky, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Wake Forest, and Vanderbilt in addition to the Hokies and Duke.
