While Virginia Tech was officially gaining a commitment from three-star QB Tahj Bullock, they were also extending an offer to talented in-state DB Shawn Asbury II.

Asbury was "extremely excited" to receive the offer during a facetime call with defensive coordinator Justin Hamilton and assistant Matt Kardulis. The conversation was "great" as a whole as they talked about "family, school, football, and basically anything" during their conversation.

This wasn't an out of the blue offer as Asbury told us that he had been "receiving a lot of interest" prior to the Hokies extending him an offer. Given that and the Hokies' presence at the in-state power, Virginia Tech's offer has quickly put them at the forefront of Asbury's recruitment.

"This offer impacts it a lot. As an in-state kid, this definitely put them at the top," Asbury said.

Shawn Asbury had this to say about why the Hokies are "at the top" of his recruitment currently.

"Mainly because I grew up watching VT, and just me being in-state and it being close to home, I feel that it could be a good fit," Asbury said.

Asbury could also fit well defensively as a versatile defensive back that Virginia Tech sees as a prospect to play safety, cornerback, or nickelback though cornerback seems more likely initially at this moment, at least at the start of his VT career. Recruiting services are also split on that with 247 Sports listing him as a cornerback and Rivals at safety.

Asbury has built up a strong offer list to date headlined by offers from the Hokies, Pittsburgh, Kansas, Navy, and more while also receiving interest from Cincinnati, East Carolina, Liberty, and ODU.

Asbury is a very intriguing prospect who could be poised for a major breakout in 2020 after missing most of the 2019 season due to a knee injury suffered last spring. He has since made a full recovery playing well enough to earn All-Area Second Team honors as a kick returner for the Free-Lance Star in Fredericksburg, VA despite missing most of the season while also playing basketball this past winter.

With this offer, Virginia Tech has made themselves the top contender for three-star DB Shawn Asbury with the Hokies hoping to land another in-state commitment with three VA stars already on board.
